Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  5. I did some digging in some of my old catalogs and found one dated January 26, 1989. It looks like they are no longer in business. The choir boys in this catalog are a little different but I remember over the years that the patterns changed. It was from Craft Patterns Inc. Home Workshop Plans 3N345 N. 12th Stree St. Charles, IL 60174 312-584-3334
  6. I cut out some of these choir singers in the late 60's. If I remember right the full color paper patterns were from Kraft Patterns. They had a lot of Color Christmas Patterns. You glued them on Plywood with wood glue, cut them out with a jig saw and coated them with a clear poly exterior coating.
  7. I received this email today, it is not my house just thought I would share. "Good news is that I truly out did myself this year with my Christmas decorations. The bad news is that I had to take him down after 2 days. I had more people come screaming up to my house than ever.Great stories. But two things made me take it down. First, the cops advised me that it would cause traffic accidents as they almost wrecked when they drove by. Second, a 55 year old lady grabbed the 75 pound ladder almost killed herself putting it against my house and didn't realize it was fake until she climbed to the top (she was not happy). By the way, she was one of many people who attempted to do that. My yard couldn't take it either. I have more than a few tire tracks where people literally drove up my yard."
  8. The coldest it got here during the Christmas season was in the 20's and it did not freeze. Also Propylene Glycol is used in some canned Soda's so it is safe to use.
  9. We are located in Pilot Mountain North Carolina about an hour drive from Greensboro. We decorate over two acres and visitors park in our lighted parking lot and walk through our display on lighted paths. This year will be our 6th year in North Carolina but 44 years since I started the Display in Florida. Our display will be much larger this year as we have purchased The Blue Ridge Festival of Lights that was located in Woodlawn Virginia at Walk of The Wild. See our WXII 12 news clip. There is a short commercial at the beginning. http://www.wxii12.com/video/22067975/
  10. I stand corrected, it was 1977 that it snowed in Miami Florida. I still have a copy of the Miami Herald news paper with the headlines.
  11. I have seen Ice and snow in Florida several times during the years when I lived in Florida. I even remember when it snowed in Miami in 1972. It was such a rare event, they let us out of work so we could all go outside and watch it snow. It looks like tonight it is colder in Orlando than it is here in North Carolina. It is 32 degrees here and 29 degrees in Orlando. This is the first year that we have had snow on our display here in North Carolina. On December 18 -19 we had 7 inches of snow.
  12. Garden Ridge in Greensboro still had a lot of lights and outdoor decorations left on Wednesday at 75% off.
  13. It cost too much to by Glycerin at a drug store as they only sell it in 4oz and 8oz bottles. I buy my glycerin and propylene glycol at CQ Concepts Inc. http://www.cqconcepts.com/
  14.
