Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  1. Customer service is a thing of the past for most companies. It's like it's #15 or 20 on their list of priorities.
  2. I'm looking for 200' - 250' of SPT2 and about 15 Male and 15 female vampire plugs. I know CDI has 1000' rolls, but I don't need that much, and I don't want ot spend a fortune on unneeded product.
  3. I plan on calling HD and complaining and letting them know that Lowe's accepted and will get more of my business now. Ten I'm gonna call Lowe's and Thank them.
  4. Lowe's just got a HUGE two thumbs up from me this year. in shiort - HD tried to screw me out of the deal. No combining of the HD and GE coupon, AND only 4 strings per sale. Also, they only had 50ct C5 multi or warm white GE lights, and only 10 ww, and 15 multi in stock. Lowes not only honored the HD deal, BUT combined the GE coupon....The honored the HD coupon @ the $5 off for GE lights. Yeah, I got GE's for $7 off per string. And Lowes did not need or want the old lights. They siad I could put them in the recycle bin, if I wanted to get rid of them. HA!!!!
  5. Got to Lowe's and asked the store manager if they'll honor the HD deal AND the $2 GE coupon. The manager lookeds at the two coupons and said, sure - no problem. I then asked if I needed to bring in my old lights and the cashier and manager looked at me and said "No, we don't need them. But you can put them in our recycle bin if you want to get rid of them". I got my new lights, went to the register, told the cashier, and she rang them up at the $5 off + the $2 GE coupon. I walked out for $5.97 per string. Now I have to decide if I need any more strings for next years projects and get Lowes to honor the deal again before Nov 14th.
  6. Well went to HD and turmed in my old lights, grabbed my new lights, went to the register, and they tell me " no stacking coupons & deal, also the limit is 4 not 5." I questioned this, and the manager got sort of angry at me, so I grabbed my old lights out of the box and walked out of the store. I'm now on my way to Lowes.
  7. Cool, let us know about the Lowe's turnout. I'm looking to turn in about 10-15 strings of old lights for some LED's.
  8. Home Dept trade-in coupon thread is up now as well. Time to look for some LED's for my wreathes. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE COUPON SHEET....
  9. Well, an off year for Halloween trick-or-treaters. I bought the normal amount of candy, and still have over half of it left..... UGH. Guess We'll be bringing it in to work for the next few weeks.

  10. Wow, what a day...Get up, eat breakfast, go to Sam's club, come home, go back out to Home Depot, stop at Verizon, go back home, setup part of my Halloween display, Head back out, get gas, go to Spirit Halloween for last minute stuff, back to Verizon again, back to Home Depot, then back home.

  15. I've got a small Halloween display. It's mostly a wood/pvc fence, a few spot lights, a few tiki torches burning the colorflame fuel (red green, and blue), and a few misc tombstones, and cobwebs. Nothing animated or running off a controller. I wanted to get a few animatronics, but the budget didn't allow it this year. That reminds me I need to get some of my stuff out and go thru it. I need to get new flood light holders with the spring clamp on them for my gutter. And touch up the paint on my fencing. Anyone have about 20-25' of Orange or Purple rope light and a power adapter/cord they're not using? I need it to "rope" off my sidewalk to keep the kids from trampling the display area. I'm only going to put my display up for that weekend (including Monday), because of possible vandals and such.
  16. This was too good not to pass along... Skinny little guy goes into an elevator, looks up and sees this HUGE bald-headed, tattooed, guy standing next to him. The big guy sees the little man staring at him, he looks down and says: '7 feet tall, 350 pounds, 20 inch penis, 3 pounds of testicles, Turner Brown.' The little guy faints and falls to the floor. The big guy kneels down and brings him to, shaking him. The big guy says, 'What's wrong with you?' In a weak voice the little guy says, 'What...

  17. Ugh, the wreck @ Topside Rd is going to really screw up my drive to work. Everyone is going to be rubber necking and trying to jump off the interstate @ Topside Rd, right where I need to go. Damn.....

  18. The Weather Channel says yesterdays east coast earthquake was caused by an unknown fault line running under D.C. and through Virginia. It is now being called Obama's Fault, although Obama will say it's really Bush's Fault. Another theory is that it was the founding fathers rolling over in their graves. But I believe what we all thought was an earthquake was actually the effect of a 14.6 trillion dollar check bouncing in Washington

  19. TO ALL MY FELLOW NUTS.. I just realized.. We sit & stare at a screen.. We talk to ourselves.. We have imaginary friends, zoos, farms, cities, & fake animals.. We cook imaginary food in imaginary bakeries.. We play bingo that gives no money.. We poke people & think its OK.. We even write on walls.. Think about it.. Facebook is a mental hospital & we are all it's patients. Feel free to steal this.. I just did! :) Party in my ward later

  23. Even thought we are locals to the area (Knoxville), the wife and I decided at the last minute to stay overnight at the Inn at Christmas Place on Saturday night. Anyone going to be around Saturday night at the Inn? We're coming up to the vendors hall on Saturday to look around and then hit a few of our favorite spots in G'burg, then come back to the Inn and go to dinner probably at the Partridge and Pear (maybe Carino's). Then Sunday morning get up and head the short drive back home. Maybe we'll run into some of you up there.
