Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  1. Dad is eating lunch, and shortly (in hospital time, that means a few hours) he'll be going home. He's got one heck of a headache still, and 4 staples in his noggin as a reminder of the "best day of his life" he claims he had on Saturday. LOL. Thanks for all the prayers, thoughts, and offers for help and assistance.

  2. Update - dad has been cleared and will be coming home today. As usual, eakying in the doctor to sign the forms....anytime from now to 2pm.

  3. Saw dad tonight. He was still groggy, but talked and chatted with us for a while. We brought him a non-alcoholic Irish care package (corned beef, potatoes, soda bread, and part of a scotch egg). He enjoyed it. They are keeping him overnight so they can do another CT scan in the morning. They did say he also has a concussion from the blow to the head and they want to make sure the bleed on the brain starts going down. We'll know more in the morning.

  4. Dad update. They kept him overnight in ICU because of a small bleed on the brain. They did another CT this morning abd the spot is slightly smaller than yesterday. They are keeping him overnight in a regular room. He is alert, awake, and wants all the IV, tubes and beeping machines to go away. He still doesn,t remember what happened after he was picked up by mom and they left the Irish Times until he got to the hospital.

  5. Thanks for all the prayers. Dad is sleeping off all the Irish whiskey. He seems to be fine except for the staples in the back of his head. They're keeping him overnight for observation. Will update tomorrow.

  6. Still waiting. Ugh!

  7. Snow flurries in west Knoxville. Too bad it's 48 degrees!

  8. Coffee made. Time to go outside and look for any damage from the storms last night.

  11. My friend asked me today what the name of the show is where they go fishing and catch all the crabs..I said "Jersey Shore"...Was I wrong?

  12. I'm seriously HATING all the TEBOW-worshiping right now. I don't HATE Tebow, just all the other people doing the "Tebow", or praising him as the best football player of all time. He's NOT!!!! He's good, and like QB's of the past, it's just his time. Don't get me wrong, I hope the Bronco's make the SuperBowl, Just stop the focus on Tebow and start looking at the rest of the team. Tebow is NOT the only Denver Bronco on the field during the game. It takes a T E A M to win the game.

  13. Yummm. Chili and tamales. Perfect for a cold winter afternoon. The Trader Joe's cheese amd green chili tamales are wonderful.

  14. Just finished taking down all the outdoor Christmas decorations. Will work on the indoor ones tomorrow.

  17. Just finished making a batch of Peppermint Bark ice cream for Christmas dinner. Tomorrow night I'm making Bailey's Irish Cream ice cream. The main course will be a Black pepper and espresso crusted beef tenderloin with roasted potatoes and salad.

  18. Next time I see a dead deer on the side of the road I'm going to leave and come back dressed as Santa Clause with a sign that says, "Help, need ride."

  19. You better watch out, you better not cry, better not pout, I'm telling you why: you're 11 years old and you have an iPhone, you little brat.
